Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
