Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
