A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
